Hinn 25. apríl 2014 var Kópavogsbæ birt stefna af hálfu hluta erfingja Sigurðar K. Hjaltested, fyrrum ábúanda á Vatnsenda. Aðalkrafa stefnenda var sú að Kópavogsbær greiddi dánarbúi Sigurðar tæpa 75 milljarða króna vegna eignarnáms á landi Vatnsenda árin 1992, 1998, 2000 og 2007. Málið var þingfest 5. nóvember 2014.
Dómur Héraðsdóms Reykjaness liggur nú fyrir. Var Kópavogsbær sýknaður af öllum dómkröfum stefnenda er tóku til eignarnámsins árin 1992, 1998 og 2000. Á hinn bóginn var bærinn dæmdur til að greiða dánarbúi Sigurðar K. Hjaltested kr. 968.000.000 vegna eignarnáms bæjarins í landi Vatnsenda á árinu 2007. Fjárhæðin ber vexti frá aprílmánuði 2010 en dráttarvexti frá dómsuppsögu.Kópavogsbær fer nú yfir niðurstöðuna í samráði lögmenn bæjarins. I kjölfarið verður tekin ákvörðun um það hvort dóminum verður áfrýjað til Landsréttar.
